Aśvaghoṣa (ca.80 – 150 CE) verfasste die Buddhacarita("Akte des Buddhas"; Buddhacaritam) als Gedicht im Sanskrit Mahakavya - Stil.
Von den 28 Gesängen des Gedichtes sind die ersten 14 im Sanskrit vollständig vorhanden, während die Gesänge 15 bis 28 unvollständig erhalten sind.
Im Jahr 420 n. Chr. publizierte Dharmakṣema eine chinesische Übersetzung. Ca. im 7. Jahrhundert wurde eine tibetische Version erstellt, die dem ursprünglichen Sanskrit näher zu sein scheint als die chinesische Übersetzung.
